About the JISC RSC YH e-Learning Conference 2009

Image of people playing on Nintendo Wii Every year, the JISC Regional Support Centre for Yorkshire & Humber hosts a main e-Learning Conference for senior management and practitioners from supported learning providers in the region.

The day focuses on innovation in strategy and practice in teaching and learning and is filled with speakers, workshops, 'hands on' sessions, and an exhibition.

This year, the conference takes place on Tuesday 2nd June 2009 at York Racecourse.

Theme for 2009: A Joined Up Approach

How can we advance teaching, learning and skills development by effectively examining, experimenting, evaluating and integrating new technologies?

What will I gain by attending?

The conference will support delegates in finding practical solutions, at all levels, through showcasing different approaches to learning using technology. These approaches will demonstrate how a ‘joined up’ approach has achieved a measurable impact on learners’ engagement, retention and achievement.

Target audience

This conference is aimed at senior and middle managers and practitioners in the FE & Skills (FE, Sixth Form and Specialist Colleges, Adult and Community, Work Based and Offender Learning) and HE Sectors.

Delegates follow a 'Journey'

Delegates will be able to follow one of the following ‘journeys’ through the event:

Engaging all learners: inclusivity; accessibility; NEET; 14-19; 24/7 access; Entry to employment; preferences for using technology; future gazing; learning and teaching strategy, working collaboratively with learners, recognising and using existing media.
Assessing learning: E-assessment; e-portfolios; e-iLP; initial assessment; reflection, functional skills/key skills assessment, assessing informal learning, peer assessment, self-assessment.
Learning without walls: mobile learning; supporting mobile and personally owned devices/laptops (power, wifi); managing web access/online activity (instant messaging, social networking) without constraining new learning opportunities; online learning environments; use of online learning resources; use of external applications e.g. Google docs; MIS supporting learning and teaching; improving the reliability/ease-of-use of the environment.

How will I learn on the day?

The ‘journey’ will include a mix of the following:

Regional good practice workshops of 20 minutes, plus 10 minutes discussion
An exhibition area with ‘interactive’ zones for trying out technology and applications in the context of learning
‘How to ..’ sessions for learning how to use technology in learning

Delegates will have an opportunity to reflect on and record their learning during the day.

Networking

Networking opportunities are an important part of this event. As well as time on the day, the JISC RSC YH social network - My RSC YH Space - will host a range of discussions both before and after the day.

JISC Services

Delegates will also have the opportunity to engage with the whole range of JISC Services on the day through workshops, exhibition and ‘how to’ sessions.

Aims of the day

Delegates will have the opportunity to:

explore a range of approaches to learning and teaching that embed technology, which have had an impact on learning
explore new ideas and approaches that have a potential to make an impact on learning
try out new technologies and approaches to learning and teaching
experience a personal learning ‘journey’
explore JISC Services and resources
Network with others in the region to share and discuss ideas and practice

Conference outcomes

By the end of this conference, delegates will be able to reflect on practice within their job role, and organisation, on the use of technology in learning and be better informed to develop strategies for moving forward.
